A refined International Gothic devotional panel featuring the Virgin and Child flanked by Saint Jerome and Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
This devotional panel, attributed to the Italian painter Carolino da Viterbo, reflects the stylistic conventions of the International Gothic period. The composition follows a traditional hierarchical arrangement, placing the Virgin Mary at the centre, holding the Christ Child. The figures are framed by a rounded arch, a common feature in ecclesiastical art of the fifteenth century. The use of gold leaf for the background and the halos creates a luminous, flattened space that directs the viewer's attention toward the sacred subjects.
Saint Jerome, identifiable by his bearded appearance, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria, distinguished by her crown, flank the central figures. The Christ Child holds a small bird, a symbolic element often included in such works to represent the soul or the future passion of Christ. The faces of the figures are rendered with delicate, soft features, characteristic of the refined aesthetic favoured by painters working in the Italian tradition during this era. The application of tempera allows for precise detail, particularly in the decorative patterns of the garments and the fine lines of the hair.
Carolino da Viterbo, active in the region of Lazio, produced works that align with the broader artistic currents of the time, where the influence of Sienese painting remained strong. The work demonstrates a balance between linear elegance and the symbolic requirements of religious narrative. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions within the gilded halo further integrates the text into the visual design, a practice common in medieval and early Renaissance devotional objects. This piece provides a clear example of the stylistic transition occurring in Italian art, where the rigid forms of earlier centuries began to soften into more naturalistic expressions while maintaining the spiritual gravity required for private or public worship.
