The composition follows the iconographic tradition of the 'Hortus Conclusus', or enclosed garden, which serves as a symbol of the Virgin's purity. The dense green foliage behind the figures provides a stark contrast to the bright red of the Virgin's mantle and the golden hues of the angels above.

Five angels hover in the upper portion of the frame, their forms arranged in a gentle arc. They support a crown, preparing to place it upon the head of the Virgin. The artist employs a precise, linear style characteristic of the Bruges school, focusing on the careful rendering of textures: from the soft skin of the infant to the heavy, folded fabric of the robes. The background hedge is executed with meticulous attention to individual leaves and small white blossoms, creating a sense of depth despite the relatively shallow space.
