A 1867 commercial vignette by Isaac Weissenbruch for the Hilversum steam-powered spinning and weaving mill, featuring heraldic motifs and formal typography.
This etching by Isaac Weissenbruch serves as a commercial vignette for the Hilversumsche Stoomspinnerij & Weverij, a steam-powered spinning and weaving mill. Dated 5 April 1867, the work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century industrial expansion in the Netherlands. The composition is circular, featuring a central shield topped with a crown, flanked by stylized foliage. The text encircling the emblem identifies the firm, while the names J.M. Bottenheim and Th. van Rijckevorsel are inscribed below the shield, indicating the proprietors or directors of the enterprise at the time.
Weissenbruch, a member of the notable Dutch artistic family, demonstrates a precise, clean line quality typical of nineteenth-century commercial engraving. The inclusion of the date on a ribbon at the base provides a clear temporal anchor for the document. Such vignettes were common in the period, used on letterheads, invoices, and official company stationery to project an image of stability and professional authority. The design balances heraldic elements with the functional requirements of corporate branding, capturing the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and the burgeoning industrial age.
The print is executed on a neutral, light-toned paper, which allows the black ink to stand out with clarity. The aesthetic is restrained and formal, focusing on legibility and symbolic representation rather than decorative flourish. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of Dutch industrial history, documenting the specific identity of a textile mill that operated during a period of significant economic change in Hilversum. It remains a functional example of graphic design from the late nineteenth century, preserved for its historical value as a record of regional commerce.
