A detailed etching by Edmond Charles Joseph Yon depicting a rural scene in Montmartre, Paris, as it appeared in 1870.
This etching by Edmond Charles Joseph Yon, titled 'Vue prise aux Buttes Montmartre', captures a quiet, rural aspect of the Parisian outskirts during the late nineteenth century. Before the rapid urbanisation that transformed the area into a bustling artistic hub, the Butte Montmartre retained a semi-rural character, defined by modest dwellings, open fields, and a slower pace of life. Yon, a skilled engraver and painter, focuses his attention on the textures of the vernacular architecture, specifically the weathered roof of a shed and the adjacent stone structure. The composition is grounded in the tradition of French Realism, prioritising an honest observation of the environment over romanticised embellishment.
The artist employs precise, controlled lines to define the structural elements of the buildings and the surrounding terrain. The sky is rendered with subtle, horizontal hatching, which provides a sense of atmospheric depth without distracting from the primary subject. Small details, such as the faint plume of smoke rising from the chimney and the sparse vegetation in the foreground, contribute to the overall sense of stillness. The work was exhibited at the Salon of 1870, reflecting the period's interest in documenting the changing face of the French capital and its periphery. By choosing to depict the humble, utilitarian aspects of the site, Yon provides a historical record of a location that would soon be irrevocably altered by the expansion of the city. The print demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency in the medium of etching, with a clear distinction between the light-filled sky and the darker, more densely worked areas of the architecture. It remains a valuable example of the graphic work produced by artists associated with the French school during this era.
