This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige III captures the rapid transformation of Japan during the early Meiji period. As a prominent practitioner of Yokohama-e, a genre focused on the arrival of foreigners and the modernisation of port cities, the artist documents the intersection of traditional Japanese life and Western influence. The composition depicts the bustling waterfront of Yokohama, where Western-style brick architecture stands alongside traditional maritime activity.
