Beskrivning
A dreamlike depiction of the Eiffel Tower by French Naïve artist Henri Rousseau, capturing the Parisian skyline in the warm light of sunset.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter who worked as a customs officer, produced this depiction of the Eiffel Tower during a period when the structure was still a relatively new addition to the Parisian skyline. His approach to painting rejects traditional academic perspective, favouring a flattened, dreamlike arrangement of forms that characterises his unique contribution to modern art.
The composition features the Eiffel Tower rising above the trees, topped with a small French flag. A bridge spans the Seine in the foreground, where small figures and a boat provide a sense of scale. Rousseau employs a distinct colour palette, using warm oranges and yellows to suggest the sunset, which contrasts with the cooler tones of the sky and the water. The trees are rendered with a repetitive, stylised quality, typical of his method of building up foliage through individual, deliberate brushstrokes.
Unlike his contemporaries who sought to capture the fleeting effects of light through Impressionist techniques, Rousseau focused on a clear, almost static representation of his subjects. This work demonstrates his ability to transform a modern industrial landmark into a scene that feels removed from time. The lack of conventional depth creates a sense of quiet stillness, inviting the viewer to observe the scene as a constructed reality rather than a direct transcription of nature. His work often displays a meticulous attention to detail, even when the proportions appear unconventional. This painting remains a clear example of his ability to blend the familiar architecture of Paris with his own imaginative vision, resulting in a composition that is both recognisable and distinctly personal to his artistic output.

Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
