A detailed 17th-century etching by Romeyn de Hooghe depicting a funeral procession at the historic Sephardic cemetery in Ouderkerk.
This etching by Romeyn de Hooghe depicts a funeral procession arriving by boat at the Beth Haim cemetery in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. Established in the early 17th century, this site served as the primary burial ground for the Sephardic Jewish community of Amsterdam. De Hooghe, a prolific Dutch engraver and draughtsman, captures the scene with precise attention to the funerary customs and the specific architectural character of the tombs.
The composition centres on the arrival of the coffin, which is being carefully unloaded from a barge onto the riverbank. Mourners in period attire gather around the vessel, while a horse and rider wait on the shore. In the background, the stone sarcophagi, characteristic of the Sephardic tradition, are arranged amongst trees and foliage. The artist employs a clear, descriptive line to delineate the textures of the clothing, the wooden structure of the boat, and the weathered surfaces of the monuments.
Beyond its aesthetic qualities, the work functions as a historical record of the social and religious life of the Portuguese Jewish community in the Netherlands. De Hooghe was known for his ability to document complex public events and topographical details with clarity. His work often appeared in books and pamphlets, providing contemporary audiences with visual information about the world around them. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of Dutch maritime culture and the specific traditions of a minority community during the 17th century. The inclusion of the title cartouche at the top, reading 'Begraefnis der Joden Buyten Amsterdam', confirms the location and subject matter, typical of the era's interest in documenting local landmarks and customs.
