A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the coastal landscape of Okitsu under a pale moon, from the Tokaido harimaze zue series.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the coastal area of Okitsu, a station along the Tokaido road. It originates from the series titled Tokaido harimaze zue, or Cutout Pictures of the Tokaido Road. This specific format was designed for collectors to cut out individual scenes from a larger sheet to be pasted into scrapbooks or albums. The composition captures a quiet evening atmosphere, defined by a pale moon suspended in a dark, graduated sky.
The foreground features a grassy bank with several pine trees, their silhouettes rendered with characteristic economy. Below, small thatched structures sit nestled near the water, providing a sense of scale against the vast expanse of the bay. In the distance, the dark outline of the coastline stretches across the horizon, with the faint suggestion of a boat visible on the water. Hiroshige employs a restrained colour palette, relying on muted greens, soft greys, and the natural tone of the paper to convey the stillness of the scene.
As a master of the late Edo period, Hiroshige demonstrates his ability to distil complex geographical features into a concise visual statement. The print avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the atmospheric quality of the light and the relationship between the land and the sea. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy in the upper right corner provides context and title information, typical of the genre. This work offers a glimpse into the travel culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where such prints served as both souvenirs and artistic representations of the famous route connecting Edo and Kyoto. The technical execution reflects the collaborative nature of the ukiyo-e process, involving the artist, the carver, and the printer to achieve the subtle gradients seen in the sky and water.
