A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, capturing the serene Ochanomizu canal in Edo with precise detail and atmospheric colour.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Ochanomizu canal in Edo, present-day Tokyo. It belongs to the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital (Toto meisho), a collection that documents the urban and natural geography of the city during the Edo period. The composition focuses on the Kanda River, which was artificially widened to facilitate transport and water supply.
The scene features a wooden bridge spanning the narrow canal, flanked by steep, verdant embankments. Hiroshige employs a balanced perspective, drawing the eye toward the centre of the bridge. Below, figures are shown fishing along the wooden pilings that line the water. The artist uses a refined colour palette, particularly in the application of bokashi, a technique of colour gradation seen here in the sky and the water. The steep slopes are rendered with subtle textures, suggesting the earth and vegetation of the canal banks.
Hiroshige was a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, known for his ability to capture the atmosphere of specific locations. His work often incorporates human activity within the natural or urban environment, providing a sense of scale and daily life. This print demonstrates his technical skill in woodblock printing, from the precise registration of the blocks to the nuanced application of ink. The series remains a primary source for understanding the topography of Edo before the rapid modernisation of the Meiji era. The print reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between human engineering and the natural world, a recurring theme in his broader body of work.
