Alfred Sisley produced this work during his residence in Marly-le-Roi, a period often considered the most productive of his career. The composition captures the view from the grounds of the Coeur-Volant house, a property belonging to his patron, Georges de Bellio. Sisley focuses on the interplay of light across the suburban terrain, documenting the transition between the domestic architecture of the house and the distant, hazy rooftops of the village.
The painting demonstrates the characteristic Impressionist interest in atmospheric conditions. Sisley employs a palette dominated by autumnal tones, using broken brushstrokes to render the foliage and the gravelled foreground. The house on the left provides a structural anchor, its vertical lines contrasting with the soft, diffused light that permeates the sky and the distant horizon. A small figure is visible in the foreground, adding a sense of scale to the quiet, residential setting.
Unlike his contemporaries who often sought out urban spectacles, Sisley remained dedicated to the observation of the French countryside and its changing seasons. His approach here is one of careful observation, prioritising the capture of a specific moment in time. The application of paint is varied, with thicker impasto used to define the textures of the trees and the building, while the sky is rendered with thinner, more fluid strokes. Artist Biography
Alfred Sisley
He was born in Paris in 1839 to English parents. His father William ran a luxury goods import-export business. At eighteen, Sisley was sent to London to study commerce. He came back wanting to paint. He studied alongside Monet, Renoir, and Bazille at Gleyre's studio in the early 1860s.
He was the most landscape-committed of the Impressionists: he painted almost nothing else. No portraits, no cafe scenes, no modern life. His father's business collapsed during the Franco-Prussian War. Sisley had been financially comfortable until then; after 1870, he lived in poverty for the rest of his life. In 1876 he painted a series of six canvases of the catastrophic Seine flooding at Port-Marly: moody skies, planks laid as walkways, skiffs serving as ferries. They are among his finest works.
He died of throat cancer in 1899 at Moret-sur-Loing, aged fifty-nine. His partner Eugenie Lescouezec had died a few months earlier. Prices for his paintings increased almost immediately after his death.
