A 1542 pen and ink drawing by Wolfgang Huber, depicting the town of Feldkirch framed by an expressive, overhanging tree.
This drawing by Wolfgang Huber, dated 1542, presents a topographical view of the Austrian town of Feldkirch. Huber, a member of the Danube School, is recognised for his distinct approach to the natural world. In this work, the artist employs a rhythmic, calligraphic line to define the foliage of the large, overhanging tree that dominates the foreground. The branches and leaves are rendered with a sense of movement, creating a canopy that frames the town and the mountainous horizon beyond.
The composition balances the immediate presence of the tree with the distant, smaller-scale architecture of the town. Huber uses fine, parallel lines to suggest the sun's rays emanating from the upper left, casting a directional light across the scene. The town itself is depicted with clear, structural lines, showing the fortifications and buildings typical of the period. The contrast between the organic, flowing forms of the vegetation and the rigid, geometric shapes of the town buildings is a characteristic feature of Huber's draughtsmanship.
This piece demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between human settlements and the surrounding environment. The precision of the ink work allows for a high degree of detail, from the texture of the tree bark to the individual structures within the town. As a representative example of sixteenth-century German drawing, the work provides insight into the observational practices of the era. The verso of the original sheet contains a study of a seated woman holding a child, which suggests the practical, multi-purpose use of paper in the artist's studio. This print captures the technical skill and stylistic sensibilities of Huber, offering a clear view of his approach to both natural and urban subjects.
