Executed in 1931, the drawing demonstrates his early focus on the structural geometry of Mediterranean architecture. The composition utilises a high vantage point, looking down upon the tightly packed white buildings and the distinctive bell tower of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.

Escher employs a precise, controlled application of coloured pencil to define the forms. The steep cliffs on the right side of the frame provide a vertical contrast to the horizontal expanse of the sea, which is rendered with subtle, rhythmic strokes. Unlike his later, more famous mathematical tessellations and impossible constructions, this piece reflects his observational period.
