A detailed nineteenth-century etching by Paul Jacob Laminit, depicting an idealised view of a Syrian landscape based on a composition by Gaspard Dughet.
This fine etching and engraving, titled 'Vue près de Damas, en Syrie', is the work of the German printmaker Paul Jacob Laminit. It is based on an original composition by Gaspard Dughet, often referred to as Gaspard Poussin. The print reflects the European fascination with the Near East during the early nineteenth century, a period when topographical studies and idealised views of distant regions were highly sought after by collectors.
The composition follows the conventions of the classical tradition. Large, framing trees occupy the foreground, creating a natural proscenium that draws the eye toward the middle ground. A cascading waterfall serves as a transition to the distant, mountainous terrain where a fortified settlement sits atop a rocky outcrop. The figures in the foreground are rendered with subtle detail, providing a sense of scale to the expansive environment. The sky is filled with soft, rolling clouds, which balance the solid, textured forms of the stone and foliage below.
Laminit demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin and etching needle. He employs a variety of hatching techniques to differentiate between the textures of the rugged rock, the soft leaves of the trees, and the reflective surface of the water. The print was published in Paris by Tessari et Cie, a firm known for distributing high-quality reproductions of classical and contemporary works. This piece offers a glimpse into the way European artists interpreted the geography of the Levant, blending observation with the stylistic rigour of the period. It remains a representative example of the printmaking craft that flourished in the early nineteenth century, where the collaboration between painter and engraver allowed for the dissemination of imagery across the continent.
