A 1922 oil painting by Suzanne Valadon, capturing a view from her window in Genets with firm brushwork and a focus on structural form.
Suzanne Valadon, a self-taught artist who began her career as a model for painters such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, developed a distinct approach to painting that prioritised structural clarity and firm outlines. In this 1922 work, she captures a view from her window in Genets, Brittany. The composition is organised around the interplay between the domestic architecture in the distance and the dense, rhythmic foliage in the foreground.
Valadon employs a palette of earthy greens, ochres, and cool blues to define the scene. Her brushwork is deliberate, avoiding the soft, blurred edges often associated with Impressionist works. Instead, she uses strong, visible strokes to construct the forms of the trees and the rooftops. The sky, filled with heavy, textured clouds, provides a sense of atmospheric weight that balances the solidity of the buildings below. The perspective is direct, inviting the viewer to share the artist's vantage point.
Unlike many of her contemporaries who focused on the fleeting effects of light, Valadon was concerned with the physical presence of her subjects. She brings a sense of permanence to the scene, treating the natural elements and the man-made structures with equal attention. The painting demonstrates her ability to synthesise the observed world into a structured, coherent image. Her work from this period reflects a move away from the decorative, favouring a more robust and grounded representation of the French countryside. This piece remains a clear example of her mature style, where the artist's hand is visible in every mark, creating a sense of immediacy and physical connection to the environment she depicts.
