A detailed copperplate engraving depicting a cavalry battle, produced as part of an imperial commission for the Qianlong Emperor.
This engraving belongs to a series commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor to commemorate the military campaigns in the Western Regions. Jean Denis Attiret, a Jesuit missionary and court painter in Beijing, contributed to the design of these works. The composition reflects a synthesis of European perspective and traditional Chinese aesthetic values.
The scene depicts a cavalry engagement, capturing the movement of horses and archers across a rugged terrain. The artist employs fine lines to delineate the figures, weaponry, and the surrounding topography. The inclusion of mountains in the distance provides a sense of scale, while the foreground focuses on the immediate action of the battle. The integration of calligraphy into the upper section of the print is a characteristic feature of this series, as the text provides the Emperor's own poetic commentary on the event.
Technically, the work demonstrates the influence of European printmaking techniques introduced to the Qing court. The shading and modelling of the forms differ from traditional Chinese ink wash methods, showing a preference for the precision of the burin. This series was produced in Paris under the direction of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, ensuring that the final prints met the standards of the French royal court. The result is a document that records both the political ambitions of the Qing dynasty and the cross-cultural exchange between European artists and the Chinese imperial administration. The print offers a view into the military history of the period, presented through a lens that balances descriptive accuracy with the formal requirements of imperial propaganda.
