A precise seventeenth-century etching by Caspar Merian depicting the fortified town plan of Steenwijk, featuring its star-shaped ramparts and defensive gates.
This etching by Caspar Merian provides a precise, top-down view of the fortified town of Steenwijk. Merian, a member of the notable Merian family of engravers and publishers, produced this work during a period when military cartography was essential for documenting the defensive capabilities of European settlements. The composition focuses on the star-shaped ramparts, a characteristic feature of seventeenth-century Dutch military architecture designed to withstand artillery fire.
The print employs a clean, technical line quality to delineate the town walls, moats, and internal street layout. A legend in the upper right corner identifies key features, including the various gates (Oostpoort, Westpoort) and the surrounding waterways. The inclusion of a scale bar, marked in 'Rusten', confirms the intended utility of the document for military or administrative reference. The surrounding area is depicted with minimal detail, ensuring the viewer's attention remains fixed on the defensive perimeter of the town.
Merian's approach is functional rather than decorative. The etching captures the geometric rigour of the fortifications, reflecting the systematic nature of town planning in the Low Countries during the seventeenth century. The work serves as a historical record of the town's layout, providing insight into how urban spaces were organised for protection and logistics. The clarity of the engraving allows for a clear understanding of the town's relationship with the adjacent river and the strategic placement of its entrances. This print is a representative example of the topographical documentation produced by the Merian workshop, which was widely circulated across Europe to provide accurate visual information about regional geography and military infrastructure.
