A detailed 1721 etching by Louis Fabritius Dubourg depicting the mythological encounter between the god Vertumnus and the nymph Pomona.
This etching by the Dutch artist Louis Fabritius Dubourg depicts the classical myth of Vertumnus and Pomona. The narrative, drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses, tells of the god of seasons and gardens, Vertumnus, who disguises himself as an old woman to gain access to the garden of the wood nymph Pomona. Dubourg captures the moment of their interaction, with the disguised god seated beside the nymph, surrounded by putti who add a playful, decorative quality to the scene.
The composition is characteristic of the early eighteenth-century Dutch interpretation of Rococo aesthetics. Dubourg employs a delicate, linear approach to etching, using fine cross-hatching to define the drapery of the figures and the textures of the garden setting. The background features architectural elements and classical statuary, which provide a sense of depth and place the figures within a formal, cultivated environment. The presence of the putti, one of whom holds an arrow, introduces a subtle sense of amorous tension, typical of the period's interest in mythological romance.
Dubourg, active in Amsterdam, was known for his work as a painter, draughtsman, and etcher. His style often reflects the influence of French decorative arts, which were popular among the Dutch elite during this era. The print demonstrates a high level of technical control, particularly in the rendering of the foliage and the soft, atmospheric quality of the light. The work is dated 1721 in the lower right corner, placing it within the artist's productive middle period. This piece offers a glimpse into the European fascination with classical themes, rendered with the lightness and grace that defined the artistic sensibilities of the time.
