A dynamic abstract composition by Patrick Heron, featuring rhythmic vertical brushstrokes and a balanced interplay of colour and texture.
Vertical: January 1956 is a significant example of Patrick Heron's transition into full abstraction during the mid-1950s. At this stage in his career, Heron moved away from the figurative subjects that occupied his earlier work, choosing instead to explore the physical properties of paint and the interaction of colour on a flat surface. The composition is defined by a series of vertical, rhythmic brushstrokes that create a sense of movement across the canvas. These marks, often applied with a deliberate, gestural quality, suggest a structured yet energetic arrangement.
Heron's palette in this piece relies on a contrast between dark, dense forms and lighter, cooler tones. The vertical orientation of the strokes creates a sense of height and rhythm, drawing the eye upwards. Small, sharp accents of yellow and red punctuate the darker areas, providing a visual tension that prevents the composition from settling into a static state. The application of paint varies in thickness, allowing the texture of the brushwork to contribute to the overall visual experience.
This work reflects Heron's interest in the light and atmosphere of his home in St Ives, Cornwall. While the painting is non-representational, it captures the sensation of light filtering through trees or reflecting off water. By focusing on the relationship between colour and space, Heron invites the viewer to engage with the painting as a physical object rather than a window into a scene. The work demonstrates his ability to balance controlled structure with a spontaneous, painterly approach, a hallmark of his practice during this period. It remains a clear representation of the St Ives School's contribution to the development of British abstract art in the post-war era.
