A detailed series of gouache studies by Pieter Adrianus Schipperus documenting the aftermath of a fire at the church in Asperen.
This work by Pieter Adrianus Schipperus documents the aftermath of a fire at the church in Asperen. The composition is organised as a series of vignettes, providing multiple perspectives of the structure in its damaged state. Schipperus employs a monochromatic palette of greys, whites, and blacks to convey the stark reality of the destruction. The artist captures the skeletal remains of the stone walls, the debris-strewn ground, and the surviving tower, which looms over the ruins.
Schipperus was a Dutch artist known for his precise draughtsmanship and his interest in topographical subjects. His approach here is observational, focusing on the structural integrity of the building and the texture of the ruined masonry. The use of gouache allows for opaque, layered applications of paint, which effectively render the cold, grey tones of stone and ash. Each panel within the work serves a specific purpose, from the exterior view of the church grounds to the close-up details of the interior arches and fallen debris.
By presenting these views together, the artist creates a comprehensive record of the event. The work avoids romanticising the ruin, opting instead for a clear, factual representation of the site. The light is diffused, typical of a cloudy day, which prevents harsh shadows and allows the viewer to focus on the architectural forms. This piece is a valuable historical document, preserving the appearance of the Asperen church before subsequent restoration or further decay. It reflects the nineteenth-century interest in documenting local history and architectural heritage through visual media. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, demonstrating its value as a record of Dutch cultural history.
