A detailed architectural print by Noach van der Meer (II) documenting a revolutionary monument erected on the Westermarkt in Amsterdam in 1795.
This work by Noach van der Meer (II) documents a temporary architectural installation erected on the Westermarkt in Amsterdam in 1795. The structure was created to celebrate the political shifts occurring in the Netherlands during the Batavian Revolution. The design reflects the Neoclassical aesthetic prevalent in late eighteenth-century Dutch public art, characterised by symmetry, classical orders, and allegorical motifs.
The central arch features a relief depicting the destruction of the aristocracy, a thematic choice that aligns with the revolutionary spirit of the period. Flanking this central panel are two smaller niches containing figures, framed by columns with distinct red and blue accents. The use of watercolour over an etched base provides a clear, diagrammatic representation of the monument, typical of commemorative prints produced to record ephemeral public decorations.
Van der Meer (II) was a skilled draughtsman and engraver, and his work here captures the precise proportions and decorative details of the temporary structure. The composition is strictly frontal, allowing the viewer to analyse the architectural elements and the symbolic programme of the installation. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones to define the structural components while allowing the allegorical scene to remain the visual focus. This print serves as a record of the visual culture associated with the political upheaval in Amsterdam at the end of the eighteenth century, providing insight into how public spaces were transformed to communicate revolutionary ideals to the citizenry. The inclusion of the title at the base of the print confirms its function as a documentary image, intended to preserve the memory of the Westermarkt installation for a wider audience.
