A detailed 1766 etching documenting the elaborate festive illuminations and architectural decorations of a private residence in Amsterdam.
This etching and engraving by Cornelis van Hoogeveen junior documents the elaborate public decorations installed on the Amsterdam residence of C. Scholten van Aschat in 1766. The print is divided into three distinct vertical panels, each capturing a specific aspect of the celebratory display. The left panel depicts the facade of the canal house, illuminated by numerous lamps arranged in patterns that spell out initials. The central panel features an allegorical column topped by a radiant sun, surrounded by military standards and symbols of state, reflecting the political and social climate of the Dutch Republic during the eighteenth century. The right panel presents a decorative archway adorned with heraldic lions, floral garlands, and inscribed verses in Dutch, which serve to honour the political figures of the time.
Van Hoogeveen junior employs precise, clean lines to render the architectural details and the symbolic iconography. The work functions as a visual record of ephemeral urban festivities, capturing the temporary nature of such public displays. The composition balances the rigid geometry of the canal house facade with the fluid, ornamental curves of the surrounding decorative elements. The inclusion of text within the print provides context for the occasion, linking the visual spectacle to the specific political loyalties of the homeowner. This piece offers a glimpse into the tradition of festive lighting and architectural ornamentation in eighteenth-century Amsterdam, where private residences were transformed into public stages for political expression. The print is a fine example of Dutch graphic art from the period, demonstrating a high level of technical skill in the handling of light and shadow through cross-hatching and line work.
