A 1862 pen and ink drawing by Pieter van Loon depicting a domestic scene from the narrative series of the boy Jantje.
This pen and ink drawing by Dutch artist Pieter van Loon, dated 1862, captures a domestic scene from the narrative series concerning the boy Jantje. The composition depicts a modest interior where a group of figures gathers near a hearth. A woman stands by the fire, attending to clothing, while a young boy sits on a chair, drying himself after an apparent accident involving ice. A smaller child stands with their back to the viewer, and another figure crouches near the flames, occupied with household tasks. A discarded doll lies on the floor, adding a touch of realism to the narrative.
Van Loon employs a fluid, sketch-like line quality that prioritises movement and character expression over rigid anatomical precision. The scene is rendered with a sense of immediacy, typical of nineteenth-century genre illustrations intended for storytelling or moral instruction. The artist uses hatching to suggest shadow and depth within the room, creating a clear distinction between the figures and the sparse furnishings. The inclusion of handwritten text at the bottom of the sheet integrates the visual narrative with the written word, a common practice in the production of illustrated tales of the period.
This work provides a glimpse into the social and domestic life of the mid-nineteenth-century Netherlands. The focus on everyday activities, such as drying clothes and tending to children, reflects the period interest in genre subjects. The drawing remains a clear example of Van Loon's ability to combine observational detail with a narrative structure. The work is preserved in its original state, showing the artist's initial marks and corrections, which offer insight into his creative process. It is a piece that invites the viewer to engage with the specific story of Jantje while appreciating the technical skill required to convey a complex scene through simple ink lines.
