A fine mezzotint engraving by Richard Earlom, depicting the mythological scene of Venus and Adonis after the original painting by Nicolas Poussin.
This mezzotint by Richard Earlom, published in 1766, reproduces the mythological composition by the French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin. Earlom, a master of the mezzotint technique, translates the tonal qualities of Poussin's original oil painting into a monochrome medium. The print depicts the goddess Venus reclining with Adonis, surrounded by a group of putti and a river god. The scene is set within a wooded area, with the figures arranged in a classical manner that reflects the influence of the Italian Renaissance on Poussin's work.
The technical execution demonstrates Earlom's ability to render soft transitions of light and shadow, a characteristic feature of the mezzotint process. By roughening the copper plate to create a dark ground and then scraping away areas to reveal lighter tones, Earlom achieves a velvety texture across the foliage and the figures. The composition is balanced, with the central figures of Venus and Adonis providing a stable base for the more dynamic arrangement of the putti above and to the right. The inclusion of the river god on the left adds a sense of depth and narrative context, typical of the allegorical subjects favoured during the period.
This print was produced for John Boydell, a significant figure in the eighteenth-century British print trade who sought to make works from private collections accessible to a wider audience. The inscription at the bottom identifies the original painting as being in the collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds, providing provenance for the source material. As a reproduction, this work serves as an example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers in the eighteenth century, where the printmaker acted as an interpreter of the original artist's vision, ensuring the dissemination of classical themes to collectors and enthusiasts across Britain.
