A view of the vegetable allotments in Montmartre, painted by Vincent van Gogh during his time in Paris in 1887.
Painted during his residence in Paris, this work captures the semi-rural outskirts of Montmartre before the area underwent rapid urbanisation. Vincent van Gogh lived with his brother Theo on the Rue Lepic, a location that provided him with a vantage point over the city and the remaining allotments that dotted the hillside.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, the artist employs short, rhythmic brushstrokes to define the textures of the vegetable plots and the wooden fencing. The palette here consists of earthy ochres, greens, and browns, reflecting the cultivated soil. In contrast, the background depicts the sprawling Parisian cityscape under a vast, cloud-filled sky. The city is rendered in cooler tones of blue and grey, creating a sense of atmospheric distance that recedes toward the horizon.
This piece demonstrates the influence of Impressionist techniques on Van Gogh, particularly in his application of paint and his interest in capturing the effects of light. However, the structured, almost decorative arrangement of the foreground elements hints at the stylistic direction he would later pursue. The work provides a record of a specific moment in the history of Paris, documenting the transition between the rural character of the hill and the encroaching industrial city. The application of paint is deliberate, with visible impasto that adds a physical quality to the surface of the canvas. By focusing on the humble vegetable gardens, Van Gogh elevates a mundane subject, treating the textures of the earth and the geometry of the fences with the same attention as the distant urban view.
