Vega-Nor - Victor Vasarely

Vega-Nor is a characteristic example of the optical art movement, which gained momentum during the 1960s. Victor Vasarely, often considered the father of this movement, focused his practice on the relationship between geometry and perception. In this work, he employs a grid of squares that undergo systematic deformation to create the illusion of a three-dimensional sphere emerging from a flat surface.

The composition relies on the manipulation of scale and colour. By distorting the squares, Vasarely suggests a convex form that appears to bulge towards the viewer. The colour palette transitions from cool blues and greens at the periphery to warmer yellows, oranges, and reds at the centre of the sphere. This gradient reinforces the sense of volume and light, as the eye perceives the centre as being closer and more illuminated than the surrounding field.

Vasarely sought to create a universal visual language that could be understood without reference to traditional subject matter. His approach was highly methodical, often using mathematical principles to determine the placement of shapes and the progression of tones. By removing the artist's hand from the final execution, he aimed for a precise, objective aesthetic. The work does not represent an object in the physical world, but rather explores the mechanics of human vision. The viewer experiences a kinetic effect, as the grid appears to shift or vibrate when observed. This interaction between the static image and the observer is the primary objective of the work, demonstrating the potential for geometric forms to generate dynamic visual experiences.
