A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a procession of standard-bearers and soldiers on horseback.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active in the early sixteenth century, captures a procession of standard-bearers. The work belongs to a series documenting ceremonial military displays, often associated with the triumphal entries of monarchs or high-ranking officials. Hogenberg demonstrates a clear command of line, using hatching to define the folds of the heavy fabric banners and the metallic surfaces of the soldiers' armour.
The composition is arranged in a linear fashion, typical of frieze-like depictions of processions common in the period. The central figure on horseback holds a banner inscribed with the word 'LIBERTAS', a common motif in civic and military iconography of the era. The horses and men are rendered with a focus on anatomical structure and period-accurate military attire, including helmets and breastplates. The background remains sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the rhythmic movement of the figures as they march across the frame.
Hogenberg, who spent much of his career in Mechelen, is known for his ability to document the pageantry of the Habsburg court. His work provides a window into the visual culture of the sixteenth century, where such processions functioned as political theatre. The print exhibits the technical precision of Northern Renaissance printmaking, where the artist balances the demands of descriptive accuracy with the requirements of narrative clarity. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the specific group represented, linking the visual imagery to the formal records of the time. This piece is a fine example of early modern graphic art, reflecting the period's interest in classical motifs and contemporary military organisation.
