A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a ceremonial procession of standard-bearers carrying Habsburg and Papal heraldry.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicts a procession of standard-bearers, a segment from a larger series documenting the coronation of Emperor Charles V in Bologna in 1530. The work captures the formal pageantry of the sixteenth century, focusing on the heraldic displays of the Habsburg Empire and the Papal States. Hogenberg employs a precise, linear technique to delineate the figures of the horsemen and the heavy, embroidered fabric of the banners.
The composition is organised horizontally, reflecting the nature of a ceremonial procession. Each rider is mounted on a horse adorned with trappings, while the banners display specific iconography, including the double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and the keys of Saint Peter associated with the Papacy. The artist pays close attention to the period-specific attire, from the plumed hats and slashed doublets of the riders to the armour worn by the lead figure. The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the symbolic weight of the flags and the rhythmic movement of the mounted figures.
Nicolaas Hogenberg, active in the early sixteenth century, was known for his ability to record complex public events through printmaking. This series provides a visual record of the political and religious alliances of the era. The etching demonstrates the technical capabilities of the period, using hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and texture within the garments and the animals. As a historical document, the print offers insight into the visual language of power during the Renaissance, where heraldry functioned as a primary method of communication. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions at the base of the image further situates the work within the tradition of humanist scholarship and official record-keeping, common in the courts of the time.
