Beskrivning
A 1931 portrait by Otto Dix depicting his son, Ursus, rendered with the clinical precision and detached observation characteristic of the New Objectivity movement.
This portrait of the artist's son, Ursus, dates to 1931. It belongs to the period of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), a movement that emerged in Germany during the 1920s as a reaction against the emotional subjectivity of Expressionism. Dix, known for his unflinching depictions of war and social decay, here turns his gaze toward the domestic sphere with a clinical, detached precision.
The composition is stark and frontal. The child is positioned centrally against a dark, atmospheric background that offers no narrative context. His pale skin and blonde hair are rendered with a smooth, almost porcelain-like finish, contrasting with the sombre tones of the surrounding space. The lighting is even, avoiding dramatic shadows to focus entirely on the physical presence of the subject. The child's expression is neutral, lacking the idealised sentimentality often found in traditional portraiture of the era.
Dix employs a technique reminiscent of Old Master painting, using thin glazes to build up the surface. This approach allows for a high degree of detail in the facial features, particularly the eyes, which possess a piercing, direct quality. The simplicity of the clothing and the lack of props ensure that the viewer's attention remains fixed on the psychological state of the sitter. By stripping away extraneous detail, Dix creates a study of childhood that feels both immediate and timeless. The work demonstrates his technical mastery and his ability to apply the principles of objective observation to his own family life, resulting in a portrait that is as much about the act of seeing as it is about the subject itself.
