This textile fragment, dating to the 15th century, displays the technical sophistication of late medieval weaving. The composition relies on a repeating diamond lattice, a common structural device in European luxury fabrics of the period. Within each lozenge, a stylised floral motif appears, executed with metallic threads that would have caught the light, creating a sense of opulence typical of ecclesiastical or aristocratic vestments.
The design demonstrates a high degree of geometric precision. The intersections of the lattice are marked by circular motifs, which serve to anchor the repeating pattern and provide visual rhythm across the surface of the cloth. The use of metal thread, likely silver or silver-gilt, indicates that this piece was intended for high-status use, where the display of precious materials was as important as the woven design itself.
Despite the wear and fraying at the edges, the fragment retains the clarity of its original construction.
