A historical Coptic textile fragment featuring wool tapestry-woven bands on a linen ground, dating to the early centuries of the common era.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when weaving techniques reached a high level of sophistication. The piece consists of linen ground fabric decorated with wool tapestry-woven bands. These decorative elements, often referred to as clavi or medallions, were typically applied to tunics to denote social status or religious affiliation.
The visual composition relies on the contrast between the plain, undyed linen and the dark, dyed wool. The surviving sections show vertical stripes and small circular motifs. These geometric and stylised patterns are characteristic of late antique Egyptian weaving. The degradation of the fabric over centuries has resulted in a fragmented appearance, yet the remaining sections provide evidence of the original construction and decorative intent. The weave structure demonstrates the technical proficiency of weavers working in the Nile Valley during the early centuries of the common era.
Such fragments are valuable for the study of ancient garment construction and the history of textile production. The use of wool for the decorative elements allowed for the inclusion of more complex patterns compared to the linen base. While the original garment is lost, the surviving portions offer a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the period. The geometric precision and the choice of motifs reflect a tradition that balanced functional garment design with decorative ornamentation. This print captures the texture and historical character of the original archaeological find, preserving the visual evidence of a craft tradition that spanned several centuries.
