A 1872 Japanese woodblock print designed as a paper craft model for constructing a festival float.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji, dating to 1872, functions as a sheet of paper craft components. Known as 'kumitate-e' or assembly pictures, these prints were designed for children to cut out and construct into three-dimensional objects. The subject here is an elaborate festival float, complete with wheels, structural panels, and decorative figures.
The composition is organised as a flat layout, with individual parts arranged across the page to maximise the use of the paper surface. The aesthetic reflects the Meiji period's fascination with both traditional festival culture and the accessibility of printed media. The colour palette is dominated by bold reds, deep blues, and ochre, typical of the woodblock printing techniques of the era. Each section is labelled with Japanese text, providing instructions for assembly and identifying the specific parts of the float.
Utagawa Yoshifuji, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was known for his versatility in the Ukiyo-e tradition. While he produced many conventional prints, his work in the 'kumitate-e' genre demonstrates the playful side of nineteenth-century Japanese print culture. The print serves as a record of ephemeral childhood entertainment, capturing the structural logic of a festival float within a two-dimensional format. The lines are precise, ensuring that the user could cut and fold the paper to create a functional model. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of craft, education, and popular art in late nineteenth-century Japan.
