This piece features a central square of fine linen, framed by a wide border of needle lace. The lace work displays a repeating pattern of scrolling vines, leaves, and small blossoms. The technique relies on the contrast between the solid, opaque linen centre and the open, airy structure of the needle-made border. The lace border is constructed using a series of buttonhole stitches, which create the firm, raised edges characteristic of high-quality needle lace.
Needle lace, or punto in aria, emerged in Italy during the sixteenth century. It represents a shift from earlier forms of cutwork, as it is constructed entirely with a needle and thread rather than being worked over a woven fabric base. The design here follows a symmetrical, scrolling arrangement that reflects the influence of botanical motifs common in European textile production during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The openwork ground, or bride, connects the floral elements, providing structural stability while maintaining a delicate appearance.
