A fine art print of a classical Ottoman calligraphic composition by the master Sheikh Hamdullah, featuring elegant Thuluth and Naskh scripts.
This piece represents the refined aesthetic of Ottoman calligraphy, a discipline that reached a high point under the guidance of Sheikh Hamdullah. As a master of the craft, Hamdullah transformed the existing scripts, introducing a more fluid and balanced approach to the Thuluth and Naskh styles. This work displays the characteristic precision of his hand, where the weight of the ink and the curvature of the letters follow strict geometric proportions while maintaining a sense of organic movement.
The composition is divided into two distinct sections. The upper panel features larger, bolder characters, likely in Thuluth script, which command attention through their sweeping lines and deliberate spacing. The lower panel contains a denser block of smaller, more compact text, demonstrating the artist's ability to maintain legibility and grace within a confined space. The surrounding margins are decorated with subtle, marbled patterns and gold illumination, which frame the text without distracting from the primary calligraphic form.
Sheikh Hamdullah is credited with standardising the Ottoman school of calligraphy, moving away from the heavier styles of the past toward a more elegant, readable form. His influence persisted for centuries, as his students and followers adopted his methods as the standard for imperial documents and religious texts. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the depth of the ink, allowing for a close examination of the brushwork. It is a study in discipline and balance, reflecting the high value placed on the written word within the Ottoman court. The interplay between the bold upper script and the delicate lower text creates a visual rhythm that is both structured and harmonious, typical of the classical period of Islamic art.
