A detailed ink drawing of a temple pillar featuring the deity Ardanarishvara and a female attendant with a flywhisk.
This ink drawing depicts a highly detailed architectural column, characteristic of South Indian temple design. The central figure is Ardanarishvara, the composite androgynous form of the Hindu deity Shiva and his consort Parvati. This representation embodies the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies within a single body. To the side, a female attendant holds a flywhisk, a traditional symbol of status and devotion in temple iconography.
The drawing focuses on the structural and decorative elements of the pillar. The capital features a kirtimukha, a protective face motif common in Dravidian architecture, surrounded by geometric and floral borders. The precision of the line work suggests a study intended to document the proportions and ornamentation of temple sculpture. The artist employs a clean, linear approach, prioritising clarity of form over shading or atmospheric effects. This method is consistent with technical drawings produced during the colonial period to record Indian architectural heritage for archival purposes.
The composition is vertical, reflecting the elongated nature of the stone pillar. The artist balances the ornate carvings of the column shaft with the relative simplicity of the surrounding space. Every element, from the jewellery worn by the deities to the moulding at the base of the pillar, is rendered with careful attention to detail. This print provides a clear view of the iconographic conventions used in temple construction, offering a window into the aesthetic principles of the period. It is a study of form, symmetry, and religious symbolism, presented with the rigour of an architectural survey.
