This work by Albert Gleizes displays the characteristic rigour of his later period, where the artist moved away from the fragmented objects of early Cubism towards a more rhythmic, geometric abstraction. Gleizes was a central figure in the development of the movement, co-authoring the seminal text Du Cubisme with Jean Metzinger in 1912. His approach here prioritises the flat surface of the canvas, organising space through a series of interlocking arcs, circles, and rectangular planes.
The composition is divided into distinct chromatic zones, each containing a variation of circular motifs that suggest mechanical or celestial movement. The central vertical axis acts as a spine, anchoring the surrounding blocks of colour. Gleizes employs a palette that balances cool blues and greens against warmer ochres and deep reds, creating a sense of equilibrium across the frame. The application of paint is controlled, with clear boundaries between shapes that prevent the image from collapsing into chaos.
Unlike the earlier analytical phase of Cubism, which sought to deconstruct three-dimensional objects, this piece focuses on the internal logic of the painting itself.
