A dynamic abstract composition by Alan Davie, featuring bold, gestural brushwork and a stark contrast between dark tones and flashes of warm colour.
This work by Alan Davie displays the raw, gestural energy characteristic of his mid-century output. Davie, a Scottish painter and jazz musician, often approached the canvas with a sense of improvisation, allowing the physical act of painting to dictate the final form. The composition is structured through a series of heavy, dark impasto marks that intersect with more fluid, scraped-back layers of pigment.
Bright flashes of orange and yellow emerge from beneath a dominant field of black and charcoal grey. These colours do not function as representational elements but rather as rhythmic pulses within the visual field. The application of paint varies from thin, translucent washes to thick, tactile ridges, creating a surface that invites close inspection of the artist's manual process.
Davie was influenced by Zen Buddhism and the concept of automatic drawing, which encouraged a direct connection between the subconscious and the brush. This piece avoids fixed focal points, instead pushing the viewer to engage with the entire surface as a unified, energetic event. The interplay between the structured, grid-like black lines and the chaotic, organic patches of colour creates a tension that is typical of his approach to abstraction during this period. By rejecting traditional perspective, Davie creates a space that feels immediate and unmediated. The work captures a moment of creative urgency, where the material qualities of oil paint are used to convey a sense of movement and internal rhythm. It is a clear example of the artist's interest in the expressive potential of non-figurative forms, where the act of painting becomes a performance in itself.
