A satirical lithograph by Henry Bonaventure Monnier depicting a young woman in a domestic setting, part of the Galerie Théâtrale series.
This lithograph, titled Une Débutante, belongs to the Galerie Théâtrale series, a collection of prints documenting the social and theatrical life of early nineteenth-century Paris. Henry Bonaventure Monnier, a draughtsman and writer, possessed a keen eye for the social rituals of the bourgeoisie. His work often captures the subtle absurdities of daily life, presenting characters with a mixture of observational accuracy and satirical wit.
The scene depicts a domestic interior where a young woman, the debutante, stands in the centre of the room. She is surrounded by figures who appear to be evaluating her presence. The composition is structured around the interaction between the standing figures and the seated gentleman, who occupies a chair in the foreground. Monnier employs a light, calligraphic line to define the figures and the surrounding furniture, while the hand-applied watercolour washes provide a muted, atmospheric quality to the scene. The background includes a bookcase, a small statue, and framed pictures leaning against a screen, elements that suggest a space of intellectual or artistic pretension.
Monnier was well known for his ability to capture the specific dress and mannerisms of his contemporaries. In this print, the clothing styles, particularly the bonnets and tailored coats, reflect the fashion of the 1820s. The print is marked with the publisher details at the bottom, indicating its distribution through commercial channels of the period. As a piece of social commentary, the work provides a window into the expectations placed upon young women entering society, framed through the lens of theatrical performance. The artist avoids heavy moralising, preferring to present the scene as a quiet, observational study of social dynamics.
