Beskrivning
Tyneham in Dorset preserves the remains of a village evacuated in wartime, its empty stone cottages standing among trees in the countryside of Purbeck.
The Purbeck village of Tyneham was evacuated in December 1943 for military use during the Second World War. Residents left their homes expecting to return, but the village remained within the training area, leaving its surviving buildings to record a community interrupted by wartime demands.
Roofless pale cottages stand beyond a low stone wall, their dark windows opening onto trees. A small roofed section survives at the left, while a broad gravel lane crosses the foreground. White and yellow flowers grow in the grass along its edges. Bright green foliage and a clear sky give the abandoned buildings a quiet, sunlit summer setting.
