A refined Baroque figure study by Giulio Cesare Procaccini, featuring two women with trumpets rendered in black chalk and white heightening.
This drawing by Giulio Cesare Procaccini captures the fluid, expressive style characteristic of the Lombard Baroque. The work features two female figures, each holding a trumpet, rendered with a combination of firm black chalk outlines and delicate white heightening. Procaccini, who began his career as a sculptor, often imbued his graphic works with a sense of three-dimensional volume and physical presence. The drapery folds are managed with a rhythmic quality, suggesting movement and weight through simple, effective strokes.
The composition reflects the artist's interest in classical forms and allegorical subjects. The figures are positioned in a manner that suggests they might be part of a larger decorative scheme or a preparatory study for a painting. The use of white chalk to define the contours of the bodies and the highlights on the fabric provides a sense of light source, typical of the period's interest in chiaroscuro. The paper tone itself acts as a mid-tone, allowing the artist to build form through minimal means.
Procaccini was a central figure in the Milanese art scene during the early 17th century. His approach to drawing often prioritised the grace of the human form and the elegance of posture. This study demonstrates his ability to convey character and narrative through gesture. The trumpets, held by the figures, suggest an allegorical function, perhaps representing Fame or a musical attribute. The work remains a fine example of the technical proficiency required in the creation of preparatory drawings during the Italian Baroque, where the economy of line was as important as the final painted result. The preservation of the original paper texture and the subtle ageing of the medium offer a direct connection to the artist's hand and his process of conceptualising complex figures.
