A satirical ink drawing from 1902 by Carl Frederik Lobeck Rögind, depicting two tramps mocking military etiquette by saluting an officer.
This ink drawing by the Danish artist Carl Frederik Lobeck Rögind, dated 1902, captures a moment of social satire through a humorous visual narrative. The composition features two tramps, one balanced precariously upon the shoulders of the other, performing a mock military salute toward a passing officer. The officer, depicted in formal uniform with a sabre, returns the gesture with a formal salute of his own, seemingly oblivious to the absurdity of the situation or perhaps choosing to engage in the irony of the encounter.
Rögind employs a clean, linear style characteristic of early twentieth-century newspaper and periodical illustration. The figures are rendered with expressive, simplified forms that emphasise the comical nature of the scene. The background, featuring a faint outline of a building and a tree, provides just enough context to ground the action without distracting from the central interaction. The contrast between the dishevelled, patched clothing of the tramps and the rigid, disciplined posture of the military figure creates a clear social juxtaposition.
As a piece of social commentary, the work plays with themes of authority, class, and the performative nature of social etiquette. By elevating one tramp above the other, Rögind creates a visual pun on hierarchy, suggesting that even those on the margins of society can mimic the rigid structures of the military establishment. The drawing reflects the popular tradition of satirical cartoons that were common in European publications at the turn of the century, where artists used humour to comment on the rigid social stratification of the era. The work remains a clear example of Rögind's ability to convey a narrative through minimal lines and character-driven humour.
