A detailed 1889 etching by Charles Adams Platt depicting sailing vessels and a steam tug on the East River in New York.
Charles Adams Platt was a significant figure in the American Etching Revival, a movement that sought to elevate the status of etching as an original artistic medium rather than a reproductive tool. This work, dated 1889, captures a quiet moment on the East River in New York. The composition focuses on two sloops, one moored near a pier and another navigating the water, accompanied by a small rowing boat. A steam-powered vessel emits a plume of smoke in the distance, providing a subtle contrast between traditional sail power and the industrialisation of the late nineteenth-century waterfront.
Platt employs a delicate, precise line quality to define the rigging of the ships and the gentle ripples on the water surface. The etching demonstrates his technical proficiency in creating atmospheric depth through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The monochromatic palette, typical of the period's printmaking, relies on the tonal qualities of the ink against the paper to suggest the hazy light of the river. The scene is devoid of excessive ornamentation, favouring a direct observation of the maritime environment. The inclusion of figures on the decks and in the rowing boat adds a sense of scale and human activity to the expansive harbour setting. This print offers a glimpse into the maritime history of New York, documenting the vessels that once dominated the city's commercial waterways. Platt's approach is observational and restrained, reflecting the aesthetic values of the late nineteenth-century American printmakers who looked to European traditions while documenting their own rapidly changing urban surroundings.
