A delicate marine study by Jan van de Cappelle, capturing two ships resting in calm water through precise graphite lines and subtle grey wash.
This drawing by Jan van de Cappelle captures the quietude of the Dutch waterways during the seventeenth century. As a master of marine subjects, van de Cappelle focused his attention on the atmospheric conditions of the coast and the calm movement of vessels. The composition centres on two primary ships, their sails partially furled, resting upon a glassy surface. The artist employs a delicate graphite line to define the rigging and hull structures, while subtle applications of grey wash suggest the weight of the sails and the gentle reflection of the boats in the water.
Van de Cappelle was largely self-taught, yet he achieved a high degree of technical proficiency in his depiction of light and water. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured dramatic storms or naval battles, he preferred the stillness of a windless day. This study demonstrates his ability to observe the specific characteristics of maritime craft, from the placement of the masts to the posture of the figures on deck. The sparse use of tone allows the paper itself to represent the bright, diffused light of the Dutch sky, a hallmark of his approach to drawing.
This work provides insight into the preparatory process of a Dutch Golden Age painter. It functions as a direct observation of maritime life, stripped of unnecessary detail. The economy of the mark-making reflects a confidence in capturing the essence of the scene with minimal intervention. By focusing on the interaction between the vessels and the horizon, the artist creates a sense of spatial depth that remains grounded in the reality of the harbour. This print preserves the texture of the original paper and the nuanced application of the wash, offering a clear view of the artist's hand.
