A detailed narrative scene from the classic novel The Plum in the Golden Vase, rendered in the precise figure-painting style of the early Qing Dynasty.
This work by Gu Jianlong depicts a narrative sequence from the classic Chinese novel, The Plum in the Golden Vase (Jinpingmei). Gu Jianlong, a painter active during the early Qing Dynasty, was known for his precise brushwork and his ability to render complex domestic scenes with clarity. The composition employs a traditional bird-eye perspective, common in Chinese narrative painting, which allows the viewer to observe the interaction between the figures and their architectural surroundings simultaneously.
The scene captures a moment of social exchange, with figures dressed in period-appropriate garments standing before a doorway. The architectural elements, such as the geometric patterns on the wall and the stone steps, are rendered with a focus on structural accuracy. The foliage, particularly the tree on the left, demonstrates the artist's attention to natural forms, balanced against the rigid lines of the built environment. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the silk support.
Gu Jianlong was a professional painter who worked in the imperial court, and his output often included illustrations for literature and historical texts. His style is characterised by a disciplined approach to line, where the contours of the figures and the textures of the clothing are defined with fine, controlled strokes. This print captures the narrative quality of the original work, providing a window into the aesthetic values of the seventeenth-century Chinese literati class. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner serves as both a title and a formal element, integrating text and image in a manner consistent with traditional Chinese art practices. This piece offers a view into the domestic life and social customs depicted in one of the most significant works of Chinese vernacular fiction.
