A refined example of Ming Dynasty semi-cursive calligraphy by Shen Shi, presented on a traditional gold-flecked folding fan.
This work by Shen Shi (1488-1544) presents a fine example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy executed on a folding fan format. Shen Shi, a scholar-official from the Wu region, was known for his mastery of various scripts. The fan format dictates the composition, requiring the artist to arrange the characters in a radial pattern that follows the physical folds of the paper. The ink is applied with a fluid, rhythmic motion, demonstrating the artist's control over the brush. The characters are written in a semi-cursive script, which allows for a degree of spontaneity while maintaining the structural integrity required for legibility.
The paper itself is gold-flecked, a common luxury material for fan painting and calligraphy during the period.
