A powerful example of Meiji-period calligraphy by the statesman Soejima Taneomi, featuring bold, expressive brushwork based on a poem by General Zhang Xun.
Soejima Taneomi was a prominent Japanese statesman and scholar during the Meiji period. Beyond his political career, he gained recognition for his mastery of calligraphy. This work displays his distinctive approach to the brush, characterised by bold, rhythmic strokes that deviate from traditional, rigid clerical script. The characters exhibit a sense of movement and individual expression, reflecting the artist's interest in the expressive potential of ink.
The text is derived from a poem attributed to the Tang dynasty General Zhang Xun. The composition consists of two vertical lines of large, powerful characters, balanced by smaller inscriptions and red seal impressions. The ink density varies across the strokes, showing the pressure and speed of the brush. This variation creates a visual texture that contrasts with the plain paper background. The work follows the format of a hanging scroll, a traditional medium for displaying calligraphy in a Japanese interior.
Soejima often drew inspiration from ancient Chinese models, yet he infused his work with a personal style that prioritised energy and structural freedom. The characters are not merely linguistic symbols but are treated as abstract forms that occupy the space with authority. The placement of the red seals provides a necessary visual counterpoint to the heavy black ink, grounding the composition. This piece offers an example of the scholarly tradition in late nineteenth-century Japan, where political figures maintained a deep connection to classical literature and the practice of brush writing.
