Beskrivning

A modernist study of two female figures by Danish artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm, characterised by bold outlines and a reductive, geometric approach to form.

Vilhelm Lundstrøm, a central figure in Danish Modernism, produced this work during a period when he sought to strip painting back to its essential components. The composition features two female figures, one presented in profile and the other from the rear, against a flat, monochromatic blue background. Lundstrøm employs a reductive approach, prioritising geometric clarity and structural integrity over anatomical realism.

The figures are defined by bold, dark outlines that separate the forms from the surrounding space. The artist uses a restrained palette of ochre, cream, and shadow-toned browns to model the bodies, creating a sense of volume through simplified planes rather than subtle transitions. This technique reflects his interest in the synthesis of form, a pursuit that occupied much of his career after his exposure to French Cubism and the works of Cézanne.

Lundstrøm often returned to the motif of the nude throughout his career, using the human form as a vehicle for exploring spatial relationships and balance. In this piece, the interaction between the two figures creates a quiet, static tension. The lack of environmental detail forces the viewer to focus entirely on the relationship between the two bodies and the way they occupy the picture plane. The work avoids narrative or emotional sentiment, opting instead for a rigorous investigation of shape and light. It is a clear example of the artist's move towards a purist aesthetic, where the arrangement of form and colour is the primary objective. The result is a composition that feels both monumental and contained, demonstrating Lundstrøm's ability to create a sense of presence through minimal means.

Artist Biography

Vilhelm Lundstr M

Vilhelm Lundstrøm, a towering figure in Danish modernism, is best known for his singular take on Cubism. Born in Copenhagen in 1893, Lundstrøm defied early expectations, abandoning a traditional academic path to forge his own artistic language. While he flirted with Fauvism early in his career, it was the angular forms and fractured perspectives of Cubism that truly ignited his imagination. Unlike his Parisian contemporaries, Lundstrøm infused the style with a distinctly Scandinavian sensibility, characterised by muted palettes and a quiet, contemplative mood.

Lundstrøm's Cubist period, though relatively brief, produced some of his most iconic works. His still lifes, featuring everyday objects like fruit bowls and bottles, are imbued with a sense of understated elegance. Stripping away extraneous detail, he reduced forms to their essential geometric components, creating a harmonious balance between abstraction and representation. Though he later moved away from Cubism, its influence remained evident in his simplified forms and refined compositions.

Despite his relatively short life – Lundstrøm died in 1950 – his impact on Danish art is undeniable. He paved the way for future generations of abstract artists, demonstrating the power of simplification and the beauty of subtle colour harmonies. Owning a Lundstrøm print is not just about acquiring a piece of art; it's about embracing a legacy of quiet innovation and timeless Scandinavian design.
