A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicting two women in traditional attire, characteristic of the Edo-period bijin-ga genre.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts two women, identified as beauties within the Yoshiwara pleasure district. Koryūsai was a prolific artist during the mid-Edo period, known for his contributions to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the portrayal of attractive women. This work belongs to a series that documents the inhabitants of the licensed quarters, capturing their fashion and social interactions.
The composition is balanced, featuring two figures standing in close proximity. They are engaged in a shared activity, examining a piece of fabric or a scroll. Their kimonos are rendered with attention to pattern and texture, demonstrating the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e printing process. The lines are precise, defining the contours of the figures and the folds of their garments. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that have aged with the paper over time, providing a sense of historical authenticity.
Koryūsai, a former samurai who turned to art, brought a refined sensibility to his prints. His work often features elongated figures, a stylistic choice that became a hallmark of his approach to the female form. The print includes calligraphic text, which provides context regarding the series and the specific subjects depicted. As a piece of Edo-period art, it offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values and social structures of the time. The print is a representative example of the commercial art produced for the urban population of Japan during the eighteenth century, reflecting the popular culture of the Yoshiwara district.
