This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Ryogoku Bridge in Edo, captured during the transition from day to night. As part of the series Famous Views of the Eastern Capital, the composition employs a distinct framing device: the massive, vertical wooden pilings of the bridge dominate the foreground. This choice forces the viewer to look through the structure, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye toward the Sumida River and the distant shoreline.

The colour palette reflects the atmospheric conditions of twilight. A deep blue gradient, known as bokashi, transitions across the sky, while the horizon retains the soft, warm hues of the setting sun. Small boats navigate the water, providing a sense of scale and daily activity within the urban environment of nineteenth-century Japan. The moon, partially obscured by the bridge structure, provides a subtle light source that unifies the scene.
