William James Glackens, a member of the group known as The Eight, produced this interior study during a period when his style shifted towards the lighter, more chromatic palette of French Impressionism. The work depicts a domestic space at 23 Fifth Avenue, capturing the play of light as it filters through a window and illuminates the furnishings. Glackens employs short, broken brushstrokes to define the textures of the upholstery and the surrounding architectural elements.
The composition focuses on the arrangement of furniture, including a prominent patterned armchair and a smaller circular table.
