A dynamic 1638 genre drawing by Pieter Jansz. Quast depicting a chaotic brawl between two women, rendered in graphite and grey wash.
This drawing by Pieter Jansz. Quast, dated 1638, captures a chaotic moment of physical conflict between two women. Quast, a Dutch artist active in the seventeenth century, frequently focused his work on the lower classes, often depicting peasants, beggars, and soldiers in various states of disarray or revelry. His style is characterised by a distinct sense of movement and a caricatured approach to facial features and bodily proportions.
In this composition, the figures are locked in a struggle. One woman raises a tool or weapon above her head, while the other leans in with an aggressive posture. A third, partially obscured figure appears between them, their expression one of alarm or shouting. The artist uses graphite and grey wash to define the forms, employing quick, energetic lines to convey the tension of the brawl. The drapery of their clothing is rendered with fluid strokes, adding to the sense of kinetic energy within the scene.
Quast was known for his interest in the grotesque and the humorous aspects of daily life. Rather than idealising his subjects, he chose to present them with a raw, unvarnished quality. This work is typical of his output, which often served as a social commentary or a form of popular entertainment for contemporary viewers. The drawing demonstrates his ability to capture fleeting expressions and dynamic poses, a skill that made his work popular among collectors of the period. The composition is relatively flat, focusing on the interaction of the figures rather than a detailed background, which keeps the viewer's attention fixed on the central action. The work remains a clear example of the Dutch interest in genre scenes that explored the less refined aspects of human behaviour.
